New England’s wide receiver position is taking shape with Julian Edelman back The New England Patriots had another solid performance during their victory over the visiting Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. While the team showed some inconsistencies , it again saw contributions by every layer of its depth chart. Let’s take a closer look at the snap count numbers from the Patriots’ 38-24 win:Julian Edelman had an eventful return...After missing the Patriots’ last 23 games due to injury and suspension, Julian Edelman returned to the field on Thursday and had a busy night: the veteran, who finished the game with seven catches for 57 yards, was on the field for 70% of New England’s offensive snaps (48 of 69). With Edelman back in the lineup, the Patriots’ wide receiver group is finally starting to take shape. The 32-year old will serve as one of the top options at the position with Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Josh Gordon also regular members of the rotation....while Cordarrelle Patterson was used as a role playerMeanwhile, offseason acquisition Cordarrelle Patterson appears to have been given a more specialized role within the offense: New England is trying to take advantage his speed and vision as a runner in the screen game and on misdirection plays. On Thursday, Patterson was therefore on the field for just eight snaps (of 69; 12%) but finished with two receptions for 11 yards and a touchdown. He will likely be a package-based option moving forward Authentic Jeremy Hill Jersey , and not the 40% wide receiver he was prior to Edelman’s return. The defensive tackle rotation is in full effectNew England is deep along its defensive line and the interior spots are a perfect reflection of that. Against the Colts, the Patriots rotated its four top tackles on a regular basis with none of them playing more than half of the defense’s 83 snaps: Lawrence Guy led the group (40; 48%), with Adam Butler (37; 45%), Danny Shelton (35; 42%), and Malcom Brown (22; 27%) also seeing considerable playing time. Brown’s likely would have been higher if not for a second-quarter injury.Kyle Van Noy continues to be the Patriots’ number one linebackerWhile Dont’a Hightower is the defense’s on-field signal caller and one of its leaders, he currently is not the number one linebacker in terms of playing time: Kyle Van Noy is. Hightower was on the field for 67% of the team’s defensive snaps (56 of 83) against Indianapolis, while Van Noy played 88% (73 of 83). The duo will continue serving as the one-two punch at the position, with Elandon Roberts the first player off the bench (41; 49%).The rookie cornerbacks saw limited actionOne week after J.C. Jackson recorded his first career interception, the undrafted rookie was on the field for just five defensive snaps verus the Colts. Seventh-round draft pick Keion Crossen also saw only limited playing time as New England opted to extensively use its top three at the position – Stephon Gilmore Womens Dont'a Hightower Jersey , Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones – against a usually potent but injury-decimated Indianapolis offense.Seven players were on the field for 100% of the snapsOn offense, six players did not leave the field on Thursday: the five starters along the offensive line went wire-to-wire, as did quarterback Tom Brady. On defense, meanwhile, safety Devin McCourty was the lone player not to be given a break. Despite forcing and recovering a fumble, the team captain had a poor performance against the Colts – and needs to bounce back on Sunday versus the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs.2018 Patriots roster cuts: New England releases linebacker Marquis Flowers, safety A.J. Moore With the NFL’s cutdown deadline coming closer, the New England Patriots continue making moves to cut down their roster. Their latest transactions involve two defenders , who have both been released, according to reports by NESN’s Doug Kyed and the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian, respectively:Releasing Moore is no surprise from the Patriots’ perspective: even though New England moved on from safety Jordan Richards yesterday and is thin behind the top trio at the position, the undrafted rookie never did enough to earn a roster spot, especially with Jason McCourty getting additional playing time at the safety position as of late.Flowers’ release was also expected. After a solid 2017 season, he failed to create any momentum during training camp and the preseason and saw Nicholas Grigsby overtake him on the depth chart. Unlike Moore, Flowers will not be able to join New England’s practice squad.

However, only 53 of them will be able to survive the cutdowns on September 1 and ultimately make the team. Over the course of the offseason, we take a look at the players fighting for those spots to find out who has the best chances of helping the Patriots recapture the Vince Lombardi Trophy.Today, the series continues with one of New England’s defensive tackles.Name: Lawrence GuyPosition: Defensive tackleJersey number: 93Opening day age: 28Experience: 6Size: 6’4, 315 lbs.2017 review: After spending the first five years of his NFL career with four different teams, Lawrence Guy might just have found a permanent home during last year’s free agency: the former seventh-round draft pick signed a four-year, $20 million contract with New England to become a core member of the team’s defensive tackle rotation. He did just that in 2017 and played more snaps than any other of the Patriots’ players at the position.Overall, Guy appeared in all 16 of the team’s regular season games and played 582 of a possible 1,060 defensive snaps (54.9%). He saw his workload increase during the postseason Youth Ja'Whaun Bentley Jersey , playing 137 of 216 snaps (62.0%) in New England’s three playoff contests. When on the field, Guy did not stand out in any particular aspect of playing the defensive tackle position. He was, however, a consistent contributor all year long. The veteran saw most of his action as an early-down, two-gap interior lineman that was used primarily as a run stopper but also as a part-time pass rusher. In that role, Guy registered a combined 72 tackles throughout the season – 64 of them coming against the run, including a team-high nine stuffed runs. He also notched 2.5 sacks as well as an additional three quarterback hits and seven hurries. While his numbers do not stand out compared to other defensive tackles across the league, Guy proved to be a valuable rotational piece along the Patriots’ interior defensive line – especially with Malcom Brown missing time due to an ankle injury, Alan Branch being phased out of the rotation, and rookie Adam Butler being primarily used as a sub-package pass rushing specialist. Guy, on the other hand, was as steady as they come.Besides playing defense, Guy also was regularly used in the kicking game as a rusher on field goal and extra point attempts. Overall Youth Tom Brady Jersey , he played 199 snaps on special teams (of 540; 36.9%) and finished the season with a field goal block – coincidentally coming against one of his former teams, the now-Los Angeles Chargers.2018 preview: After a successful albeit at times unspectacular first year in New England, the Patriots opted to slightly alter Guy’s contract: they added a $500,000 renegotiation bonus to his deal after the defensive tackle narrowly missed out on a playing time incentive of the same value last year. The move reflects how the team views Guy and his role on the defense – and that he can be expected to be a regular contributor again in 2018.While the addition of Danny Shelton could potentially cut into his early-down playing time a bit, Guy will again see plenty of action as a de-facto starter along New England’s interior defensive line: he should be expected to be on the field for at least a half of the team’s snaps again as one of the top three at the position alongside Shelton and Malcom Brown. His role, however, might turn out to look a bit different.Playing mostly as a run defender in 2017, New England might opt to give Guy more pass rushing snaps with Shelton and Brown both primary run defenders. It would therefore not be a surprise if he ultimately saw more playing time than last year, and registered more than the 12.5 quarterback pressures he had last year. A development like this one would certainly help a Patriots’ interior pass rush that was inconsistent last season.

finds a new home , signs with Jets’ practice squad As a result of second-year man Harvey Langi missing considerable practice time over the course of the summer, the New England Patriots opted to release him during September’s roster cutdowns. While there were rumors of him joining the team’s practice squad, he was never signed and remained on the open market – until yesterday: according to the NFL’s transactions wire, the New York Jets have signed the 26-year old to their practice squad.Langi originally joined the Patriots in 2017. After he went unselected during the draft, the Patriots signed him to a free agency contract. Over his first NFL offseason, Langi quickly established himself as a player worth keeping in the fold: following a strong training camp and preseason, the Brigham Young product made New England’s 53-man roster and started his rookie year as a developmental depth option at linebacker. However, his season came to a quick end on October 13: Langi and his wife, Cassidy, were waiting in their car at a red stoplight when they were rear-ended by a driver going 50 mph. The couple survived the crash but not without suffering serious injuries. Cassidy sustained fractures to both her hips as well as broken ribs , Harvey injured both his neck and his head – injuries that would keep him off the football field for the rest of the season.Seven months removed from the near-fatal car crash, Langi was back on the Patriots’ practice fields during organized team activities and minicamp – one of the feel-good stories of the year. Practicing without any visible physical limitations, the second-year defender was in a position to fight for a roster spot at the linebacker position. However, his bad luck returned: he suffered an internal laceration and was held out for the entire preseason – which ultimately led to his release.Langi is not the first ex-Patriot dealing with injuries to join the Jets: in May, the team also claimed former third-round draft pick Antonio Garcia on waivers. Garcia missed all of his 2017 rookie season due to blood clots in his lungs and was let go by the Patriots after the team acquired Isaiah Wynn and Trent Brown over draft weekend. However, the Troy product did not turn his career around in New York and was released again in late August.New England Patriots links 9/28/18 - Hightower hypes communication on defense TEAM TALKPatriots-Dolphins Thursday Injury Report.Broadcast Information: Dolphins at Patriots.Paul Perillo Scouts the Matchup: Short-handed offense needs to improve.Erik Scalavino shares the news, notes and locker-room buzz from Thursday at Gillette: Patriots looking for answers.Press Conference transcript: Devin McCourty.Press Pass: John Simon on joining the Patriots. When the Chargers miraculous landed in a position to draft Florida State safety Derwin James in the 2018 NFL Draft Los Angeles Chargers Womens Hoodie , they surprised all of us by doing one simple thing:They didn’t screw it up.That one measly moment has cultivated itself into a decision that could have the Chargers in possession of one of the best players at his position for the foreseeable future. We’ve just gotten through the one quarter mark on the regular season calendar and James has already done his fair share of stuffing the stat sheet and impacting games when the team needs it the most.Earlier this week, Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus released a article titled, “Chargers rookie safety Derwin James is everything we thought he was at Florida State.”And how right Mr. Linsey is.James was rated as the number five player on PFF’s big board prior to the draft, as well as the number one player at his position. His size and skill set allow him to line up at a plethora of positions and his snap count breakdown while in Tallahassee does a phenomenal job reflecting this notion.By position, here is how Derwin lined up during his final year at Florida State:Free safety - 292 snapsIn the box - 260Slot corner - 188On LOS/Edge defender - 69Now here are his numbers through the first four games of 2018:Free safety - 103In the box - 80Slot corner - 36On LOS/Edge defender - 28As you can probably see, it’s not much different from the way he has been used thus far. The thing that stands out most to me is that he is being used on the line of scrimmage at a much higher rate than he was in college. This is obviously due to the team’s lack of a pass rush from everywhere else but I expect this trend to continue as James has been extremely productive from this spot and currently leads the team in sacks with three through four games. To shine some more light on his efficiency as a pass rusher, James has rushed the passer just 22 times so far. From those 22 rushes, James has recorded nine QB pressures. Of those nine pressures, James has four hurries, two hits, and 3 sacks. Add on his 26 total tackles and the interception he hauled in against Jared Goff and the Rams and you have a star in the making.James current overall grade of 87.9 is the highest of any defensive rookie. It also happens to be the fourth-highest grade for all safeties in the entire NFL.So buckle-up, everyone. It’s going to be a big year for #33.The most underrated players at each position in the draft There will be some names on here that you’ve never heard of. There will be a name or two on here that you’re wondering why that player is listed. If a player is projected to go in the 20’s, he can still be underrated. I’ll state my case for each. Starting with the position that makes this sport go round.QuarterbackI don’t think there is an underrated quarterback. There might be a quarterback later in the draft that turns into a spot starter years down the road and is able to finesse a contract much like Case Keenum. This is a 5 quarterback draft. I might be in the minority here but I don’t really believe in “developmental quarterbacks.” By that I mean taking one in the 3rd round and let him develop. There’s a difference between letting your 1st round pick sit a year and letting your late day 2-3 QB sit for three years. That just doesn’t happen. There are guys in this draft that I wanted to like more Womens Customized Los Angeles Chargers Jerseys , Kyle Lauletta, Mike White, Kurt Benkert, but there were too many deficiencies to go to bat for them.Running backThis will no doubt be the toughest choice. Every year there are running backs out of nowhere that produce and are taken late in the draft. Some not even drafted. Austin Ekeler, Aaron Jones, Matt Brieda, the list goes on and on. This year there is a plethora of good backs. All shapes & sizes. I’ll give you a name that I think has some ability to contribute as a rookie. Kyle Hicks out of TCU. I don’t even know if he’ll be drafted, but he should be. He’s an obvious athlete at the position. You can tell from how effortlessly he changes directions. He’s a true satellite back that has enough wiggle to make linebackers look silly. In pass protection, he knows exactly where to be. That’ll help him get on the field early. He has good hands out of the backfield and has no issue catching the ball away from his body. I think he can surprise as a receiving threat early in his career. Hicks will be another late round running back that outperforms his draft stock.Wide Receiver Every year I fall for a receiver. This year it was no different. He’s a little different type than what I usually go for, though. Korey Robertson of Southern Mississippi is 6’2, 210 pounds and comes off as a big, strong receiver. It’s obvious he isn’t as loose as most receivers and his lack of second gear will be the reason he falls to day 3. What you can’t help but appreciate is his ability to make contested catches. He’s also a lot better after the catch than you’d imagine. He can legit be a red zone threat. He also can create separation on underneath routes with solid footwork. I’m a fan and haven’t seen many better. Robertson is a guy I’d absolutely take a late round flier on if I’m a team that needs help at receiver. Offensive LinemanIt’s tough to get excited when watching lineman. It’s easy to fall for the maulers. I made that mistake a couple years ago with T.J. Clemmings. Swing and a miss. I’ve learned a little since then. The lineman that I think is not only underrated but can possibly develop into a player is TCU’s Joseph Noteboom. Noteboom is 6’5, 310 pounds and looks like he can add even more mass to his frame. Noteboom has a little bit of everything. He’s one of the most athletic lineman in the draft. In his pass sets Authentic Derwin James Jersey , he easily gets depth and gets to his spots. When you see defenders try and redirect, by that I mean hit him with a spin move or a hesitation one way or the other, he has no issue mirroring them. That’s encouraging to see. As a run blocker, he can pave the way on double team blocks. When he blocks down on defensive tackles is when you can see some of his raw strength. In space against the run he has no issue climbing to the second level or running lateral on stretch runs. He’s not perfect by any means. When Noteboom goes to shoot his hands they tend to be outside. Rushers can bull-rush him because of it. A couple other technical issues that, to me, can be worked out. Noteboom was the easiest selection for me on this list.Edge rusherHe’ll likely fall due to injuries, but Florida State’s Josh Sweat is this drafts Danielle Hunter. He played a lot of snaps out of position for the Seminoles. He wasn’t really “let loose” as a pass rusher. There were multiple times during games when he would be lined up inside the tight end and have run responsibilities. It’s tough to showcase your skill at 250 pounds in there. When he kicked outside, that’s when you saw the athleticism that wowed at the combine.Like Hunter, Sweat was a dominant run defender that had the upside to be a very good pass rusher. Sweat plays with great effort and is quite disruptive from that edge spot. He will be great value if he falls to the third round. If healthy, he has the chance to help a team early on in his career.Maurice Hurst Hurst is a defensive tackle out of Michigan who has the draft community split. Some have him in their top 5, some in the 50 range. With Hurst, his health was a concern. What you love to hear is Hurst wasn’t asked back for a medical recheck for a heart condition. Other than that, his size? As if 3 of the top 5 defensive tackles in the NFL aren’t “undersized.” If we are talking about on the field , I struggle to see what Hurst doesn’t do that other tackles do better. See for yourself. He is so damn explosive. He can more than hold his own against the run. He can single-handedly ruin a series as a pass rusher. Guys that quick and productive don’t just stop being quick and productive because they go to the NFL. It’s tough to say what he played at, but he weighed in at 292 pounds. If he is still has the same get-off, he should be a no-brainer if he passes the medical checks for any interested team. He’s not just a wild wrecking ball, either. Hurst is so good with his hands and can keep himself clean. Give me that guy in the first.LinebackerHow a running back is patient and then bursts through the smallest of holes, Josey Jewell does the same, but as a linebacker. It’s easy to be turned off by him after he ran a 4.82 40 yard dash or was humiliated by Saquon Barkley. There were other games that he played in, believe it or not. Jewell did improve his 40 to a 4.68 at his pro day. He also looked very fluid during the drills. His 6.8 3-cone drill and 4.04 short shuttle are what we should really be focusing on. Those are great numbers. Pair that with his outstanding recognition skills and he’s set to outperform some of the faster linebackers that’ll go ahead of him. Because he can read blocks and understand what the offense is doing, he’ll get to the ball faster than a linebacker who might run a high 4.5 that relies on athleticism.Oh yeah, and he can hit. For all the talk about him being limited in coverage, he broke up 11 passes as a senior. He lives around the ball and he did for four years. That won’t change in the NFL.CornerThere has to be some sort of baseline at corner. Awhile ago I dug through some numbers to come up with a fake threshold. Here’s what I came away with. Missing some numbers on a few guys, but it narrowed down the corner list to 6 guys. One of those guys is Nick Nelson out of Wisconsin. Nelson tore his meniscus during a private workout with the Lions that will likely cost him his rookie year. That’s unfortunate as Nelson had a chance to out perform many of the corners that would’ve been selected ahead of him. He’s 5’11, 200 pounds and looks the part. He also plays the part. He’s always in a position to make a play on the pass. In 2015 as a sophomore he had 15 passes defended. Last year after transferring to Wisconsin he had a ridiculous 21 passes defended. He’s a guy that doesn’t get beat deep. There are so many little things Nelson does right at the position that make it obvious he is going to continue to show out at the next level. I hope he can recover from his injury because Nelson has a chance to be a very good player in the NFL.SafetyWhen I was watching Robertson #18 on the other side of the ball that just keep making play after play. So I watched to see if it was a fluke game. I watched a game. Then another, and another. Turns out Color Rush Melvin Gordon Jersey , Tarvarius Moore is legit. I like him more than a good chunk of the safeties that are being talked about to go ahead of him. It took for him to show out at his pro day to get noticed, and that’s fine.At 6”, 199 pounds he ran a 4.32 40 yard dash, had a 38.5 inch vertical, and 11” broad jump, with a 6.89 3-cone. That is really freaking good. It’s no surprise that the first thing you notice is the ground he covers. Whether chasing down a running back to the sideline or getting out of his break to meet a receiver. He played in a tough scheme where he had had to guard slot receivers with minimal help and more than held his own. He broke up 10 passes and had 3 interceptions. Per PFF, he had a 63.2 passer rating when targeted. He’s just as good as a run defender. He’s not him, but if you remember how that Weddle guy sort of bob & weaved through traffic and somehow ended up at the ball-carrier, Moore has plenty plays like that. To me, he’s the 4th best safety in the class. He won’t go as high as others, but he should.

That variable and Rivers' staying power as an upper-tier quarterback could boost a Chargers team that otherwise appears close to contending. -- SandoA look at Chargers’ Melvin Ingram dominance throughout the years - Gavino BorquezIngram was part of a dynamic pass-rushing duo with defensive end Joey Bosa who saw his jersey and gloves retired in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for becoming the first player in NFL history to record 19 sacks in his first 20 games. Both players are a big reason why quarterbacks fear playing Los Angeles on a weekly basis. From Kobe to Aikman, NFL players reveal childhood heroes - ESPNLos Angeles Chargers receiver Travis BenjaminRandy Moss. "The term 'You got Mossed,' that kind of stuck with me growing up, knowing that when I was in the end zone and I did go up and get a jump ball, it was like, 'I Mossed you.' ... In the middle of the 3rd quarter of the game yesterday, there was a play that was/is confusing to many football fans. If you’re a Chargers fan, you’re probably wondering why the team was not awarded a safety. Bills fans probably wonder why Nwosu wasn’t ejected for his devastating and injuring hit on Taiwan Jones. I’m not going to touch the latter question as it is likely going to be split down party lines whether you think it was a dangerous play, or an inadvertent football play. I can, however, try to answer the former. Here is the play in question:Breaking the play down into bullets:Marcus Murphy catches the punt but the ball is immediately separated by a hit from Michael Davis. The momentum from the hit drives the ball into the endzone where it is recovered by Taiwan Jones.Jones evades tackles by Kyle Emanuel, Adrian Phillips and Jatavis Brown Youth Michael Schofield Jersey , but Phillips does pull his helmet off in the process. Jones is then hit in the head and tackled by Uchenna Nwosu, losing the ball in the process. The first whistle sounds as Jones hits the ground clutching his head.A Chargers player picks up the football after the whistle. Here are some things that did not happen, which have bearing on the play:Murphy did not make a football move or establish himself as a runner. The back judge does not throw his bean bag to signal a loss of possession, confirming the previous bullet. Jones attempts to, but does not succeed at advancing the ball out of his endzone.PossessionI believe most of the confusion on this play comes from how Taiwan Jones reacts when he recovers the ball. He is very clearly trying to take the ball out of the endzone. His efforts, along with being tackled in the endzone, naturally, would make you think he is trying to escape some consequence for being tackled in the endzone (i.e. a safety or touchdown). Whether he understood the situation or not, this is not the case. The confusion starts with Murphy. He is not ruled by the back judge to have had possession of the ball. So when he loses the ball, the punt has been muffed, not fumbled. This is important because it has bearing on the recovery. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 9, Section 4, Article 1:Starting with (c), this would have been a touchdown if the Chargers had gotten the ball, but they didn’t. Part (b) better describes the situation, but doesn’t answer the question other than to state it would have been legal for Jones to advance the ball in that situation.SafetiesMost Chargers fans (myself included) were screaming at the TV that it should have been a Safety. A Bills player was tackled in his own end zone; that has to be a safety Womens Isaac Rochell Jersey , right? From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 11, Section 5, Article 1:Part (b) and Note (2) are the important bits here. Impetus is a very physics-sounding word for the motion of the ball when not in the possession of a player. The assumption is that the offense is the one providing the impetus. Kaser provides the initial impetus when he kicks the ball downfield. Later, Davis provides further impetus by knocking the ball away from Murphy. This is the impetus that moves the ball into the endzone.Part (b) is very clear that the impetus needs to have come from the Bills for this to qualify as a safety. I do not think that anyone can say that the Bills caused the ball to end up in the end zone. Imagine a very similar situation we see from time to time: A punt returner muffs (does not catch) a punt, the ball rolls into the end zone, where they recover the ball. This is a touchback, not a safety. The play with Jones is not that much different, just more complicated.TouchbacksFrom the NFL Rulebook, Rule 11, Section 6, Articles 1-2:Section 6 complements 5, as it defines what is a touchback, rather than what is not a safety.Jones being tackled in his own endzone with a ball whose impetus originated with the Chargers is completely in-line with Article 2(a).Penalties on PuntsYou all will recall that a play is dead as soon as a player’s helmet comes off. Even if the refs miss the whistle. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1:NFL Rulebook Rule 12 , Section 2, Articles 6-7 have a lot of situations covering defenseless players and unnecessary roughness. While striking a player without a helmet is not mentioned, striking someone in the head without a helmet has to be worse than a helmet to helmet hit (which is covered) as a personal foul. From the NFL Rulebook, Rule 9, Section 5, Article 1: The above rules state that a foul on a scrimmage kick (read: punt), when the dead-ball spot results in a touchback, can be assessed at the 20-yard line or force a re-kick after the penalty assessment.ConclusionMuch the to the chagrin of Chargers’ fans, the refs got this call right. There was no fumble, but rather a muffed punt recovered by the receiving team in its’ own endzone. The impetus for the ball entering the endzone came from the kicking team, so the receiving team does not commit a safety. The play would have ended on the tackle of Jones, but instead ended on the dead ball call for a player losing their helmet. The Bills maintained possession of the ball, with the dead ball spot occurring in their own endzone: a touchback.Striking a defenseless player warrants a 15-yard penalty from the spot of the foul. The Bills opted to have the penalty assessed at the touchback spot: the 20-yard line.Bills ball at their 35 yard line.Update:It appears that Taiwan Jones escaped without a concussion, though a rather nasty gash.It also appears that Nwosu reached out to Jones:

Broadcast The Los Angeles Chargers announced today via Twitter that Daniel Jeremiah , Mario Solis, and Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson will join Chargers broadcast teams:This announcement comes in the wake of Dan Fouts insisting in an interview that he should not be referred to as a Los Angeles Charger given that he played his entire career in San Diego. Given the overly sensitive nature of Chargers ownership it is not at all surprising to see that he has been replaced for Chargers preseason games (the team is only responsible for fielding its own television broadcast team during the preseason; Fouts will likely still call a few Chargers games during the regular season as part of CBS’ broadcast crew).Tomlinson will join Spero Dedes to call Chargers’ preseason contests in August (on the 11th, 18th, and 30th).On the radio side of things, Daniel Jeremiah will replaced recently resigned Nick Hardwick as the color analyst alongside Matt Smith on play-by-play. Jeremiah is most likely familiar to you thanks to his work on NFL Network, but he also played collegiate football at Appalachian State. Finally, Mario Solis will join the Spanish language broadcast handling play-by-play. He will work next to Jorge Villanueva who will be moving to color commentary. What If Nate Kaeding Made His Kick in the 2005 AFC Wild Card Game? What if you had the power to change the past? What if you could pick one moment in Chargers history, go back in time, and change the outcome? It’s something every sports fan has fantasized about at some point in their fandom and, luckily for you, SB Nation has given us the ability to do just that with their “What if鈥?#8221; week.Granted, the Chargers have many, many moments we’d all love to change. Most fans would jump back to the infamous Marlon McCree fumble in the 2007 Divisional Playoffs, but that’s too easy. Others might go back to week 17 of the 2005 season, when Marty played Drew Brees in a meaningless week 17 game against the Broncos only to se his shoulder get mangled in the fourth quarter. Like I said, there is no shortage of moments we’d all like to change.Personally Youth Isaac Rochell Jersey , I’d go back even farther than either of those games. For me, one of the seminal moments in modern Chargers history took place on January 8, 2005. Not ringing a bell? The Chargers hosted a very vanilla New York Jets team in a Wild Card Game played in a violent, driving rain, ultimately losing in overtime when Nate Keating missed a potential game-winning 40-yard field goal attempt. So, what if鈥?Nate Kaeding had made that field goal? For starters, a young and exciting football team would have won its first playoff game on the strength of a 7:54, 48-yard game-winning drive. Instead of being branded as the 12-4 football team that couldn’t beat arguably the worst AFC playoff team at home, they would have been seen as a plucky, resourceful young team that fought tooth and nail to pull out a nail-biter in its first taste of post season play. You can’t overstate the confidence boost a team can get from something like that.In terms of immediate changes, the Bolts would have been headed for a Divisional matchup with the Steelers the following week. It would have been the Chargers 3rd ranked scoring offense and 11th ranked scoring defense against the Steelers #1 scoring defense and 11th ranked scoring offense – Brees and LT vs. Ben and Bettis. At the time, Ben was still managing games rather than winning them and Brees was in he midst of a career year – I cant help but think Ben’s limitations come back to bite the Steelers and the Chargers win a tight one.Fresh off a tight victory over the vaunted Steelers, the Bolts would have met the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. While I think this matchup probably favors the Chargers on paper because LaDanian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates are healthy and pose serious matchup issues for the Pats, I think playing in the cold in New England against a team looking for its third Super Bowl win in four years gets the best of the baby Bolts in a fun and exciting game. Now, with the team heading into the offseason, the narratives surrounding the football team Color Rush Kyzir White Jersey , its quarterback and its head coach are entirely different; and that change in narrative completely changes the trajectory for team, QB and coach.First of all, the Chargers are a young team fresh off a gutsy run to the AFC Title game. They pulled out a nail-biter against the Jets, beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and gave the Pats a run for their money in New England. That sounds like the perfect jumping-off point for a run in 2005 and there is no home meltdown haunting him all offseason.Next, we get to Drew Brees. He won the first two playoff games of his career, one of them in Pittsburgh, and had a chance to win it in New England. This serves as job security for Drew. The team signs him to an extension before he ever hits the market. Drew is the unquestioned leader of the team and all thoughts of trading him, or letting him walk, evaporate overnight. And finally, everything has changed for Marty Schottenheimer. He has just engineered one of the best playoff runs in modern franchise history, including a win in Pittsburgh, and he finds he has Dean’s ear and loyalty. He feels like he’s finally shedding his choke artist reputation in the playoffs and enters the offseason without any demons lurking in the shadows. Dean steps in, forces AJ to sign Marty to an extension and finally puts the AJ vs. Marty drama to rest. With both Marty and Drew newly extended, the urge to play Drew in the 2005 finale is removed. Marty has job security and isn’t worried about getting a bonus for winning nine games. Meanwhile, Drew is the franchise, so assuming they find themselves 8-8 heading into week 17 in 2005 Color Rush Philip Rivers Jersey , Marty protects his meal ticket, instead opting to play Rivers in hopes of enhancing his trade value. No shoulder injury for Drew, no yanking of his contract offer while he’s being operated on, and Drew never makes it to New Orleans. In my opinion, Kaeding’s missed kick more or less defined the Chargers for the better part of the last fifteen seasons. That loss was the beginning of the end for Marty Schottenheimer and Drew Brees in San Diego and ultimately was what gave AJ Smith the influence he needed to push both of them out the door. Had that 40-yard kick split the uprights, everything probably changes for this organization – maybe they even curry enough favor in town to get a stadium deal done.OR鈥?they roll into Pittsburgh overconfident, lay a giant egg, lick their wounds all the way back to San Diego and absolutely nothing changes at all. AJ and Marty are still at odds, the team refuses to extend Brees, Marty still gets canned after the 2007 playoffs, and we’re sitting here talking about a similar moment in the Pittsburgh game the following week, or the Marlon McCree fumble in 2007. Because, you know鈥hargers鈥?

Vikings vs. Seahawks:  if we see the Minnesota Vikings turn it around against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night. The Vikings had a lackadaisical performance last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars , that resulted in a lot of penalties and a 14-10 loss.Look for more of the starters to get some playing time as there are only two games left before the regular-season begins. Other then that, here are three things to really pay attention to while sipping your brew and screaming at the television:3. Dalvin Cook plans on playing (I’m for real this time)Cook will be able to begin his sophomore campaign at U.S. Bank Stadium, according to an article posted on, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on the situation. If he does play, I would expect him maybe to get 10 to 12 touches. It will be interesting to see how offensive coordinator John Defilippo manages the backfield between Cook, Latavius Murray, Roc Thomas and Mike Boone. It will be the first time Cook will participate in a game since last October, when he tore his ACL. 2. Will George Iloka play?Probably the biggest news from the Vikings this past week is the signing of former Cincinnati Bengals safety George Iloka. The 28-year old, seven year veteran will get a fresh start with a new team. However, he does know a familiar face in head coach Mike Zimmer. Last season Iloka recorded 54 solo tackles with one interception. During his career, he has recorded 227 solo tackles with nine interceptions. It’s unclear if Iloka will play Womens Laquon Treadwell Jersey , but if he does, then keep an eye out for number 28 (No, I’m not talking about Adrian Peterson). It will also be interesting to see how he will contribute on the defense and if now that he is in Minnesota, if that exposes someone to be used as trade bait. 1. Once again, the offensive lineI think the line will slowly come together and form its own shape. Don’t be too surprised either if you see Brian O’Neill take over the starting job at right tackle from Rashod Hill.According to a Pioneer Press article, both Mike Remmers and Hill will participate in Friday’s game. Slowly, but surely, Minnesota’s piecing back together the line (besides Nick Easton, of course). I’d pay attention to the different combinations that get thrown out there throughout the first half, because it’s a possibility we would see that same combo in the regular-season.Would you want to see a consistent 5-man front, or several plug and chugs throughout the game?Vikings Roster Cuts: Minnesota Vikings release Kobe McCrary A former member of the Minnesota Golden Gophers that our favorite football team brought in a little over a week ago has been released by the team.As part of their initial wave of cuts on Friday afternoon , the Minnesota Vikings released running back Kobe McCrary.McCrary, primarily a fullback with the Gophers, rushed for nearly 800 yards in his time at the U of M, and found the end zone 11 times during his career. After going undrafted this past season, he had a mini-camp tryout with the Vikings, and was signed by the team on 21 August.McCrary did see some action in the team’s final two preseason games, but the expectation that he was going to make the 53-man roster wasn’t really there, given that the Vikings don’t really have a spot for a pure fullback on their roster with the way they’re currently constructed. We’ll be continuing to track all of the roster moves the Vikings make en route to trimming their roster to 53 players. That deadline is 3:00 PM on Saturday, so keep it tuned right here to watch the roster take shape between now and then.

Minnesota Vikings at Los Angeles Rams:We are just an hour (or so) away from kickoff at the venerable Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Stefon Diggs Jersey , ladies and gentlemen, for the Minnesota Vikings’ lone Thursday Night Football contest of the season. Tonight, the Vikings will take on the high-flying Los Angeles Rams, who have won each of their first three games by double-digit margins. Here is everything you need to know about tonight’s contest.Time: Thursday, 27 September, 7:20 PM Central timeLocation: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CaliforniaTelevision coverage: KSTP-9 in the Twin Cities, NFL Network, and Amazon Prime (among other legal streaming services)Radio coverage: Vikings Radio Network, Sirius Channel 81, XM Channel 226Line: Los Angeles -6.5, over/under 49.5Prediction: Rams 24, Vikings 20Three keys1) Focus - It’s been a trying week for the Vikings between getting blown out at home as a huge favorite on Sunday and the situation with Everson Griffen. But, this team has to find a way to go out onto the field and focus on the business at hand. I don’t know how they do that. . .that’s Mike Zimmer’s job, not mine. . .but they have to find a way to do it against a Rams team that means business.2) Take advantage of the matchups - The Rams are going to be without both of their starting cornerbacks tonight Authentic Kyle Rudolph Jersey , as both Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib were injured last week. That means that Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen should be able to get open early and often. . .provided that Kirk Cousins actually has time to find them. The Vikings need to find advantages anywhere they can find them, and that should be a huge one for them.3) Get back to being the Vikings’ defense - The Vikings have a reputation of being one of the best defenses in the National Football League, and might have as much talent up and down the roster on that side of the ball as any team in the league. However, they haven’t looked much like that at all this season, and if they want to stop a Los Angeles offense that’s averaging 34 points a game this year, they need to get back to where they were last season.Know the foe: Turf Show TimesTwitter: Right hereFaceBook: by DailyNorseman We’ll have a new Open Thread at the start of each quarter, ladies and gentlemen.  After 15 seasons in the NFL , Terence Newman will now see the field from a different perspective as the Nickel/Defensive Backs Coach for the Minnesota VikingsNewman announced over the weekend that he would be retiring effective immediately but would remain in Minnesota as a coach.Newman started playing in the NFL in 2003 when he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He then moved from the Cowboys to the Cincinnati Bengals, and then to Minnesota. Most of Newman’s 15 seasons have been spent with head coach Mike Zimmer.Newman spoke today and said it’ll be a strange transition from player to coach, but being able to relate to and working with the team will make it easy, “I guess I kinda felt like, you know, helping out some of the younger guys is a form of coaching I guess. And I think everybody just assumed I would do it, so I would like to give a shot and see how I can help impact some young guys and teach them what I know.”And after 15 seasons Womens Andrew Sendejo Jersey , Newman knows a lot. He has played 221 games and has 205 starts, 42 career interceptions (with three of those he returned for a touchdown), a fumble recovery, and 2.0 career sacks. While he still feels his body is in fairly good shape, he knew it was time to walk away and give the younger players a shot at starting. ‘’Some of the younger talent, obviously, you have to either say , ‘I’ll be selfish,’ and maybe take the roster spot or get somebody else an opportunity to live their dream. So, it was pretty easy.”But it wasn’t just his selflessness that drove Newman to decided to move to coaching. “‘At some point, you have to be true to yourself and say, ‘Hey, do I want to keep going forward, have a chance to maybe tear up your back or neck or whatever?” His decision to move to coaching may have not been an easy one but Newman is happy to still be working on the sidelines Authentic Kirk Cousins Jersey , “Everybody’s asking me if I’m OK and all this. I’m good. I’m still in football. I still have an opportunity to chase a Super Bowl ring.”As his new journey starts he is unsure of how he’ll feel the when the Vikings play the San Francisco 49ers but he knows he knows he is going to make the best of it. “I mean, I don’t know what the feeling I’ll have or if I’ll have a rush of emotions, or be nervous as hell because I can’t do anything on the field depending on how the game is going or whatevr, That’ll be one I just let happen and just go with it.”Vikings’ Adam Thielen and his wife Caitlin start the Thielen Foundation Today Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen and his wife, Caitlin, announced that they would be starting the Thielen Foundation partnering with the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Children’s Hospital.Fox 9 reports that Adam and Caitlin have launched the foundation as a way to give back to the community. “That first visit when you come in here and you see the smiles on the kids’ faces and these kids that have such tough circumstances and yet you’re putting a smile on their face, having fun with them and talking to them Authentic Mike Hughes Jersey , hanging out, so that’s really why we’re here today,” said Adam. The Thielen Foundation will focus on pediatric behavioral health and will strive to help children overcoming various adversities and create a support system for children and their families who are dealing with mental health issues. Adam and Caitlin will make visits to the Pediatric Behavioral Health areas at the U of M children’s center to encourage patients to achieve their best potential and participate in hospital events and giveaways. They will also have Thielen Foundation “branded recreation and comfort items.” Those will consist of journals that patients will write in to “help facilitate their path towards recovery, wellness and reaching their full potential.” The Thielens will also be hosting different fundraisers and host various events to help raise money and help to create awareness for pediatric behavioral and mental health.
